TrustyFiles Cleans Up File Sharing: First P2P Software To Report Files to Protect Children
Software Release Is Part of P2P PATROL’s Comprehensive Initiative of Education, Deterrence, and Enforcement Programs
DALLAS AND WASHINGTON, DC USA, February 16, 2005 – RazorPop, Inc. today debuts TrustyFiles 2.4 High Performance File Sharing, the peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing industry’s first child-pornography file-reporting solution. The software release follows a P2P PATROL (Peer-to-Peer Parents And Teens React On Line) meeting for private sector and law enforcement representatives at which RazorPop previewed its new offering. P2P PATROL is the industry's voluntary initiative to combat child pornography in the P2P environment.
TrustyFiles makes it simple for file-sharing users to report child pornography. Users click the offending file in their search results, downloads, or shared files, select the Report Child Exploitation command, and confirm their report. The report is automatically sent to the P2P PATROL’s child-pornography lead processing resource (http://cphotline.org); all reports are anonymous. TrustyFiles software also features a warning message when a user enters a search term known to be associated with child pornography. Resources and instructions for using TrustyFiles child-pornography reporting feature can be found at http://trustyfiles.com/help-child-protection.php.
“With the addition of the child pornography file report, RazorPop continues to lead the fight to protect our children,” said Marc Freedman, RazorPop Founder & CEO, developer of TrustyFiles. "We do not tolerate child pornography users or their illegal material, and we work closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations to combat this scourge.”
RazorPop’s TrustyFiles 2.4 is the industry’s leading multiple P2P network software. TrustyFiles features simultaneous download of the same file over Kazaa, Gnutella, and Gnutella 2 P2P networks, and the Internet. TrustyFiles searches and downloads hundreds of millions of files over the Kazaa/Fast Track, Gnutella, Gnutella 2, and Bit Torrent P2P file sharing networks. TrustyFiles is FREE with NO spyware and NO additional bundled software and can be downloaded at http://www.TrustyFiles.com.
P2P PATROL SESSION
The quarterly P2P PATROL working session held on February 1st in Dallas, TX covered the new P2Ppatrol.com Web site (http://www.p2ppatrol.com), as well as other aspects of the P2P PATROL education program that initially launched in November 2004. Additional subjects at the P2P PATROL sessions included the use of new forensics software, watermarking, and other technology advances to support enforcement activities. There was also an update on pop-up warning messages, and a discussion of new elements of the deterrence program.
Key takeaways from the P2P PATROL quarterly meeting were that P2P usage is not anonymous and that users' IP addresses are traceable by authorities. P2P application developers are committed to working with law enforcement by several different means to ensure that child-pornography traffickers will be apprehended – while also balancing civil liberties concerns. A certification program for participating P2P software distributors is now in development.
Attendees agreed to build a process that will ensure that P2P is not a good environment for child-pornography offenders. New investigatory tools presented for evaluation are very promising and ongoing reviews leading to their adoption will continue. As a priority going forward, the P2P PATROL will focus on what can improve the efficiency and productivity of investigations by official agencies.
ABOUT P2P PATROL
P2P PATROL is a voluntary initiative of P2P software providers working in support of law enforcement agencies to help protect children from exploitation and abuse. Each instance of child pornography literally depicts a child being violated, and therefore the goal of right-minded adults must be to eradicate it. With P2P PATROL, participating companies assist authorities in locating and helping current victims and preventing additional victimization.
P2P PATROL was created by Members of the Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA) and other industry leaders to provide tools for good-citizen P2P users to help rid file sharing of child pornography, which abusers of P2P software programs may attempt to distribute. In addition to this education program for individuals, P2P PATROL also includes deterrence and enforcement programs for participating companies. Participation in the P2P PATROL is voluntary for companies involved in the distributed computing industry. Interested firms may contact sari@dcia.info or call 888-864-DCIA to find out how to contribute to P2P PATROL.
